Silver lining up on the Pier
CHRIS McDonald, from South Shields Harriers, finished seventh in a huge field of 679, leading his team to silver medals in the Sunderland Strollers Pier to Pier race from South Shields to Roker on Sunday.
McDonald, second for the first two miles past Marsden, dropped back, but recorded 42:17 for the 7.5 miles along beaches and coastal paths.
Mike Jones was eighth in 42:38, and third in the over-40 section – and with Peter Morgan 27th and sixth over-45 in 45:15, Shields were second overall.
Sunderland's Tim Field, the 2001 champion, was the winner again in 39:14, using his local knowledge of the course to his advantage where runners use their own route, keeping off the main roads.
Ashley Henderson, of Blyth, who won the South Shields Sand Dancer 10km event in March, passed the long-time leader Field a mile from the finish but moved to the beach while Field, on the faster clifftop path, regained the lead and surged clear by 10 seconds.
Michael Bunn, from Jarrow and Hebburn AC, was a prominent 17th in 44:16, and fourth veteran over-45. Carl Watson finished 28th for Jarrow in 45:42, with Graeme Thompson 37th in 46:23.
Eddie Wilson, of Shields, was 54th in 47:44, and first veteran over-55. Jarrow's Mick Joyce was 81st and sixth veteran over-50 in 49:31, with Shields's Jonathon Balmer 82nd in 49:34.
Mark Slesser, from the Jarrow club, finished 91st in 50:06, with Shields's Richard Urron 94th in 50:23, and Jarrow's Tim Lowery 97th in 50:34. Shields's Bob Balmer finished sixth over-60 with 54:14.
Vicki Thompson, of Jarrow, finished 10th in a big field for the women's section and second in the over-35 category with 52:11.
Her team-mate, Cairene Chandler, was 15th in 59:45. Alan Jobling was 131st in 52:17 and fifth over-55, with Steve Kiszow 207th in 55:14.
Shields's Frank Strand finished eighth veteran over-60 in 55:33, and Malcolm Stephenson was seventh over-65 in 57:41, with Dave Whitmore eighth in 59:52.
Jarrow's David Mills finished 248th in 57:14, with Jim Ford 272nd in 57:53.
