Watt provides the bright spot

LAURA Watt finished second in the 100m and high jump, but a depleted Tyne and Wear squad could only finish fifth in their National Junior League meeting at Middlesbrough on Sunday.

Tyne and Wear were without Nick Ridgeon, resting after his exertions in the decathlon, Michelle Bratton from the Shields section, and Phillipe Goessen and Janet Abladey from Jarrow and Hebburn AC.

Watt managed a best height of 1.60m, but finished five centimetres down on Fiona Burns from Glasgow.

In the 100m she again had to settle for second in 12.9, a tenth of a second behind Tees Valley's Gemma Townsend.

Alice Ramsey was second in the shot with 9.40m and third in the javelin with 21.73m as thunderstorms swept the Clairville Stadium and twice forced the athletes off the centre.

Josh Abladey was only inches off maximum points in the 100m recording 12.1 as John Thompson from Tees Valley gained the verdict in the same time.

Abladey was fourth in the 400m in 53.7 and Ramsey finished third in the B 100m in 13.1, but Tees Valley were first with league leaders Glasgow back in third ahead of Tyne and Wear and Edinburgh.

Former Jarrow runner Carl Watson, now competing for Low Fell AC, finished a prominent fourth in Gateshead Harriers Beamish 10km race.

In the unusual event where the field races against the tram on the first lap, Morpeth's Nick Swinburn opened up a winning lead of almost three minutes over Birtley's Lee Millmore, notching up 34:31 in the heavy conditions, with Watson recording 40:43.
