Hebburn's title hopes in their own hands

HEBBURN play host to New Hartley Village in Northumberland League Division Two tomorrow in a huge fixture.

Hebburn are currently top of the league, with Tillside only four points behind the South Tynesiders in second.

Ulgham Village, in third spot, are hoping that one of them slip up, allowing them to slide into a promotion place if they win their final game.

Crucially, Hebburn have their destiny in their own hands.

They also have home advantage, and know that any sort of a win takes them up, while an emphatic one will give them their first league title for many years.

However, of the top three sides in the title and promotion race, Hebburn have the most difficult fixture against New Hartley, who until the last month were promotion contenders themselves.

With all eyes on the Hebburn fixture, Hartley will be keen to give a good account of themselves.

In Kevin Hudspith and Anthony Stokes they possess two dangerous all-rounders, while Ian Hearn and Richie Marshall have both had good seasons with the bat for the visitors.

Meanwhile, Tillside and Ulgham will play the bottom two sides, so Hebburn have to assume that nothing less than a win will be good enough.

Captain Lee Tatum has the luxury of being able to call upon a near-full-strength squad for the match with only Darren Simpson (work) unavailable.

Tatum said: "The final day promises to be very exciting. We'll need to play some excellent all-round cricket to get the result we need, but we have the players to do it. The whole squad are up for tomorrow's game."

Hebburn will be hoping that locals will come along and support the side at Hebburn Sports and Social Club on what promises to be a big game for the club. Play starts at 12.30pm.
