Westoe Rugby Club make history!

WONDERFUL Westoe are today celebrating a title and National status after a memorable weekend.

South Shields's rugby club made history after beating Beverley 43-17 to land the North One championship trophy.

It means the Shieldsmen will be in National Three (North) next season - the equivalent of South Shields FC getting into the Football League.

Chairman Duncan Murray said: "Juts a few seasons ago the prospect of Westoe playing National rugby was almost laughable.

"But today it is a reality, thanks to a dedicated squad of players and enlightened coaching."

* Don't miss Westoe Wonders - a 4-page pullout celebrating the Shieldsmen's championship success - only in tonight's Shields Gazette.
