Pair on form in Whitburn win

WHITBURN recovered from a disastrous start to eventually secure victory and claim 29 points from their visit to Philadelphia in the Warmseal Durham Senior League on Saturday.

The Universal Sealants-sponsored side appeared to have forgotten that the start time had been moved forward by half an hour as they collapsed to 48-6 in just 13 overs.

Andrew Robinson caused most of the damage, claiming the wickets of Lindsay Cullen, Chris Wood, Andy Turns and Peter Marshall.

The Villagers's hopes of maintaining their title challenge looked doomed, but a fine rearguard action from Paul Shields and Ross Carty turned the game on its head.

The pair only made one scoring shot off Robinson's final eight overs, but runs flowed freely from elsewhere as Phili skipper, Ian Hauxwell, used seven bowlers.

Robinson finished with figures of 4-24 from his accurate 15 over spell of gentle medium paced bowling, but Phili's options looked pretty thin after he was withdrawn from the attack.

Shields and Carty added 131 runs in 28 overs before Shields gave a return catch to Connor Cheal with 55 runs to his name. Carty finished unbeaten on 67, as the Villagers closed their innings on 205-8 off 44.1 overs.

The Bunker Hill outfit would have fancied their chances of chasing down the target in the 56 overs available to them, but they suffered a major blow when Bobby Steel – who has four centuries to his name this season – was caught behind by Carty off Neil Johnson's first ball of the innings.

Phili stayed well ahead of the required run rate as Hauxwell and young opener Mattie Haswell added 96 for the second wicket, before Chris Wood had Hauxwell (49) caught behind down the leg side in his first over.

Hauxwell was soon followed by Chris Noble and Haswell, who picked out Lee Henderson on the boundary off Wood's bowling with 47 runs to his name.

Phili lost wickets at regular intervals before Paul Cook finished the game when he clean bowled Richie Dixon with four overs remaining and the home side 18 runs short of their target.
