Pentathlete Emma's a record-breaker

EMMA Johnson, from Jarrow and Hebburn AC, soared to a new Championship Best performance of 2,702 points in the North Eastern and Open Pentathlon Championships at Gateshead on Sunday.

Competing in the under-13 girls' section, Johnson finished second to Sarah Lee-Liggitt, of the City of Sheffield club, in the opening 60m hurdles event with 10.70 and the shot putt with 7.79m.

However, Johnson gained the lead in the long jump with 4.64m.

A superb personal best leap of 1.52m in the high jump sealed victory, and she increased the gap in the final 60m conest in 8.79 – adding 250 points to the old record.

Mia Hodgson, from the Monkton Stadium Combined Events Squad of South Shields Harriers' Peter Tate, won the bronze medal in the under-15 girls' event.

Hodgson was fourth in the 60m hurdles in 9.75, but moved up to second with her high jump of 1.48m.

She plunged down to fifth after her shot effort of 5.94m, but a final 60m run in in the fastest time of 8.32 brought her back to the bronze medal position with a total of 2,831.

Lucy Turner, of Jarrow and Hebburn AC, finished seventh with 2,623.

Hannah Briggs was 10th with 2,412, and Shona Farish 15th had 1,975.

Ex-Shields Harriers member Ashleigh Wood retained her under-20 women's title with a total of 3,288.

Charmaine Porter, from Jarrow and Hebburn AC, finished a creditable 38th in a field of 314 in the Inter-Counties Cross Country Championships at Birmingham on Saturday.

Porter, in the under-15 girls' over 4km, recorded 16.33 as the first counter from the North Eastern Counties team in ninth position.

Luke Clark, from South Shields Harriers, suffered a nightmare run in the under-15 boys' 4km. Stuck behind a wall of runners, he finished in 202nd in 17.32.

Shildon's Kate Avery, the main hope from the area, was in contention until halfway in the under-20 women's race of 6km, but dropped back to finish seventh.

Scottish international Freya Murray, of Chester-le-Street, won the senior women's title.

Murray gained a winning advantage of nine seconds with 27.21 for the 8km race.

In the overall team competition from the 10 age group races, the North East finished seventh from the 30 counties.
