Porter leads road race challenge

CHARMAINE Porter leads the challenge from several of Jarrow and Hebburn AC's young athletes going for titles in Elswick Harriers' Good Friday Road Races at Newburn Riverside Park in Lemington.

Porter starts a strong favourite to succeed over the 1.8 miles in the under-15 girls' race.

Birtley's Sophie Foster seems the main threat, but Porter – unbeaten in local events this winter – should retain her impressive record.

Tristan Peel heads the under-15 boys' team of 2.2 miles, and with Mark Bunn and Oliver Quinn in support, the trio could be among the medals.

Shaun Barrass goes for the under-17 boys' race title with confidence, and Matthew Fearn and George Lowry will also be prominent over the 2.2 miles with the team awards in their sights.

Thomas Coyne and Charley Wynn-Davison could be involved in the medals in the under-13 boys' 1.8 miles.

Luke Adams is back in action for South Shields Harriers in the senior men's relay over four legs of 2.2 miles.

Chris Muir, George Arthur and Paul Bainbridge complete a well-ballanced team going for a high position.

Morpeth, New Marske, Sunderland and Gosforth are the probable principals over the traffic-free course along the riverside paths.

With seven races on the programme, the under-13 girls' race of 1.8 miles starts the action at 11am, with the feature senior men's relay scheduled for noon.

Changing, registration and the presentation are in the One North East building.

Graeme Taylor, from Jarrow and Hebburn AC, travelled to compete in the St Anne's 10 Miles Road Race, finishing second, but winning gold in the British Fire Brigade Championships, which was incorporated into the event.

Over the testing course near Blackpool, Steve Littler broke away in the last mile to win in 53.40, in a field of 351.

Taylor, representing the Tyne and Wear Fire Services, recorded a personal best of 55.14, with Colin Potts of Liverpool Harriers third in 56.00.
