Scorers 'have team-mates to thank'

IN-form Andy Carroll and Peter Lovenkrands might be grabbing the headlines with their goals.

But Chris Hughton was quick to point to the contribution of midfielder Danny Guthrie after Newcastle United tightened their grip on an automatic promotion place.

Carroll opened the scoring for the Championship leaders from a Guthrie corner, and Kevin Nolan had a header wrongly disallowed for offside from another first-half set-piece.

And it was Guthrie – now second only to West Bromich Albion's Graham Dorrans in the Championship's assists table, having laid on 11 goals – who set up Carroll's second with a superb ball over the top.

It meant both Carroll and Lovenkrands edged ahead of Nolan in the scoring charts, with both tied on 14 goals.

"They keep scoring goals, and they're two lads who are playing with a lot of confidence, but they'll be the first to admit that they don't score the goals unless they're getting decent service," Hughton told the Gazette.

"Danny's balls for both goals were very good, and of course Wayne Routledge's ball for Peter."

Hughton was frustrated, however, that Nolan's goal didn't stand.

"Apart from the three goals, we had a lot of good opportunities in either half," he added. "There were goals disallowed.

"I've seen the replay, and it confirmed what I thought at the time.

"I don't see any way which he could have been offside. It was a wonderful ball and a terrific goal, and it was just a shame for Kevin.

"It's one he would have liked to have scored."
