Shields athletes edged out by rivals

LEADERS South Shields Harriers and Birtley were edged out by rivals North Shields in the penultimate Northern League Division Three East fixture at Monkton Stadium on Sunday.

Brilliant junior Charmaine Porter reeled off a hat-trick against the seniors, but Jarrow and Hebburn AC finished fourth behind City of York.

Porter, 14, surged clear of Karen McEwan of Border AC, Carlisle, in the 800m recording 2:22.

The talented youngster also won the 400m in 60.6 and triumphed in the 200m in 28.8.

Jarrow's Victoria Addison won the B 400m event in 66.5.

Shields's Linda Bone finished fourth in the 800m and in the 1500m.

Phil Pitt, from the Shields club, won the 100m from Jarrow's James Andrew, who won the 200m, with Pitt third.

Jarrow's Scott Keeling was first in the B race, while Andew won the long jump.

Craig Errington was first in the B event, and Snowden was second in the triple jump.

Chris Muir was fourth in the 1500m in 4:30.1.

Jarrow's Tristan Peel finished third in the 400m in 57.9, and also in the 800m in 2:15.4.

Shields's Harry Harland finished third in the B race in 2:25.

Chris Warnock was second in the 400m hurdles in 64.0, and in the high jump with 1.60m.

Errington was first in the B event with 1.45m.

Border's international James Douglas won the 5000m in 16:16.6 with Jarrow's Greg Ritchie third in 17:03.4 and Colin Robson fourth in 17:08.2.

Kathereen Bulmer won the shot with 10.73m and was fifth in the hammmer with 20.89m.

Shields's Elaine Elliott was fourth in the shot with 6.13m and in the 400m in 71.4.

Snowden won the javelin with 38.70m and was second in the discus.

Alicia Berry, from the Jarrow club, finished third in the triple jump and in the long jump.

Shields's Danielle Murray was second in the B triple jump, while Lee Henry finished third in the B 400m in 57.4.

In the final 4x 400m race Henry, Pitt, Phil McCluskey and Warnock held off the North Shields challenge to close the gap.

However, North side finished first overall with 362 points from South Shields and Birtley on 358. Jarrow finished on 297.

Despite injuries depleting the squad, South Shields Harriers gained the team silver medals in the Chevie Chase Fell Race on Saturday. Simon Johnson was first for Shields in ninth with 3:13.53.

Keith Mackey was 10th in 3:14.01 and first veteran over-50, and Peter Rooney was 18th in 3:25.40.

Paul Doxford finished 25th, and Paul Bainbridge was 36th.

Scott Lewis was 37th, with Kevin Ayres 40th. Mike Jones, injured during the race, limped in back in 79th.
