Shields pick up league crown
SOUTH Shields Harriers and Birtley are champions of the Northern League Division Three after finishing second to hosts York on Saturday.
Shields were without Chris McDonald, Harry harland, Chris Muir and Chris Warnock, but Michael Briggs made a winning return in the long jump. Jon Snowden also won the B event.
Stephanie Hopkinson was second in the women's long jump, and Danielle Murray was first in the B section as Shields made a flying start.
Stephanie-Kate Crowell opened the scoring for Jarrow and Hebburn AC with an impressive victory in the 400m hurdles, with Murray third for Shields.
Charmaine Porter won the 800m, with Linda Bone fifth for Shields, and Porter finished second in the 400m. Claire Simpson and Angela Hunter returned to race as second claim for their old club and helped Jarrow to stay clear of relegation.
Simpson finished second in the 1500m, with Hunter third. Simpson was back to winning form in the 3,000m, with Bone third.
Greg Ritchie won the 800m, with 15-year-old Adrian Bailes, from Birtley finishing third.
Tristan Peel won the B race for Jarrow, with Shields's Phil McCluskey third.
Janet Abladey was second in the 100m, with Murray fifth.
James Andrew won the 100m for Jarrow with Shields's Phil Pitt second.
Andrew completed a double in the 200m, with Pitt third.
Scott Keeling was first for Jarrow in the B 100m, while Matthew Fearn was third in the 3,000m steeplechase and Shields's Paul Bainbridge was fourth.
Katherine Bulmer was fifth in the hammer, but won the shot.
Hopkinson won the 100m hurdles, with Murray second in the B race.
Craig Errington finished second in the 110m hurdles.
Josh Abladey was second for Jarrow in the triple jump, and third in the B long jump.
Andrew was third in the A long jump with 5.41m.
Hopkinson finished second in the shot, with Patrica White fifth.
Shields's Elaine Elliott was fourth in the 400m, while Jarrow's Victoria Addison won the B 400m, with Murray third.
Josh Abladey won the 400m, with Keeling first in the B race, with McCluskey third.
Shields's Luke Adams was second in the 1500m, with Ritchie fourth and Bailes fifth.
Snowdon was second in the discus, but went one better to win the javelin.
Jason Steadman finished fourth in the 200m.
Shields were 33 points behind overall winners York with a total of 306 points, with Jarrow fourth.
In the final league positions, Shields were first – two points clear of North Shields, with Jarrow fourth.
