Shields suffer a washout
PERSISTENT rain during the two days preceding Saturday's match rendered the Wood Terrace square unfit for play.
Would-be visitors Chester-le-Street had already been crowned champions seven days previously.
Shields' interest in the top places in the division has waned during a patchy second half of the season.
However, they will have a significant say in which team falls through the relegation trapdoor.
The Sapphire Engineering-sponsored side travel to second-from-bottom Newcastle for the final match of the season.
A victory or winning draw for the Jesmond side will condemn Norton to the drop.
However, a win for Shields will give Norton, who entertain Durham Academy, a chance to escape.
The second team again disappointed with the bat in defeat to Chester-le-Street at Ropery Lane.
And there was further disappointment yesterday as they lost to Blackhall in the Tom Blair final.
However, the team has two further chances of cup glory, as they are involved in two semi-finals this week.
Tomorrow they travel to Newcastle as they battle for a place in the last two of the George Coates Cup.
And they are up against Hunwick in the semi-final of the John Hodgson Cup on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday.
Unfortunately a logistical problem could be in store for the Wood Terrace side, with both finals scheduled for Sunday.
