Shields Hungary for more success
SOUTH Shields boss Gary Steadman has revealed he is Hungary for more success, despite his side's fine recent form.
The Mariners have stormed into joint-third in the Northern League Division One, their highest position for more than a decade.
And their side could soon have an international feel to it after taking on two Hungarian triallists.
The pair – who are studying at university in the region – have impressed in training, and Shields are now looking to push through international clearance in order to sign them on.
Steadman had hoped to see the duo in action in a friendly against Boldon on Tuesday night, but the game was postponed because of a waterlogged pitch.
He said: "We were going to have a look at a few triallists on Tuesday night.
"The pitch wasn't too bad after Saturday, but when we got all that rain there was no chance it was going to be on.
"It was a bit frustrating because it would have been good to have a look at a couple of players, and give run-outs to the likes of Simon Parkin and David Meechan.
"One of the Hungarian players in particular looks good, and it would have been nice to see him in a proper game.
"We may just have to throw him in the squad, because there's not going to be many more options to get friendlies played."
Steadman is determined to ensure his players don't rest on their laurels, despite a run of results that sees them top the division's form table.
The Mariners battered Bishop Auckland 8-1 on Saturday, their biggest victory in 14 years, despite playing for 70 minutes with 10 men after Richard Paxton was sent off.
"It was one of those games where everything we hit went in," explained Steadman. "They couldn't have complained if it had been 10.
"It was unbelievably comfortable, even with 10 men. We were 3-0 up early on, and when Paxton got sent off we thought the next goal was massive, but we went up the other end and made it four.
"The week before they drew 3-3 with Penrith, but they have just hit us on a bad day."
Steadman has a full squad to choose from for tomorrow's game, with striker Tony Stephenson returning to the squad after suspension.
The Shields boss added: "The one area we have been short in is up front, so that's a bonus."
