Shields' losing streak stretches to seven games

SOUTH Shields' losing streak in the league continued with a 1-0 defeat at home to Penrith on Saturday.

It's now seven losses in a row for the Mariners, who have yet to register a Northern League Division One win this year.

Shields started brightly, but Penrith grabbed what turned out to be the winner after just eight minutes.

Craig Wilson fired the ball towards the back post, and Willie Paul headed past Niki Lawson to give the visitors the lead.

The goal spurred Penrith on, and Wayne Robertson fired a shot from the edge of the box that hit the underside of the bar and bounced out to Dean Douglas, but he blazed his shot over the bar from close range.

Davy Graham saw his header well saved by James Holland at the other end before firing just wide of the post as Shields pressed for an equaliser.

Dean Douglas had his shot well saved by Lawson, and after the break Penrith began to dominate the game.

They couldn't find the second goal, however, and Shields were still in the contest as they pressed late on.

In the closing minutes, Jonny Wightman and Tony Coe both went close, but were unable to beat Holland, and Penrith left Filtrona Park with all three points.
