Shields search for first league win

SOUTH Shields are hoping to build on their FA Vase success at the weekend by picking up their first league victory tonight.

The Mariners host Billingham Synthonia in a Northern League Division One clash, knowing they need three points to kickstart their season.

Shields have collected just one point from their first four games, and sit second-bottom in the table.

But they will be buoyed by Saturday's 2-0 Vase victory over North Shields.

Manager Gary Steadman has extra firepower at his disposal with the return of winger Barrie Smith and striker Tony Burnell.

But a big blow is the absence of key defender Paul Stoneman, who is suspended.

JARROW ROOFING are also in league action when they host Norton & Stockton.

Roofing have made a solid start, but face a stern examination of their credentials tonight, however, as Norton could go top with victory.

Roofing boss Richie McLoughlin is boosted by the signing of defender Martin Nugent from Birtley, but will be without Kris Hughes, Keith Oliver, Peter Watling and Jamie Marshall.

Goalkeeper Gary Hoggeth, meanwhile, looks set to join Sunderland RCA, while Stuart Dixon and Keith Hutchinson have been transfer-listed.
