Shields suffer sixth defeat in a row
SOUTH SHIELDS' poor league form continued as they slumped to a 4-2 defeat at Ashington last night.
It's now six league defeats in a row for Gary Steadman's side, who have failed to win a Northern League Division One game in 2010.
Alex Benjamin was the Ashington hero with a hat-trick, and he served notice of his intent as early as the second minute when he saw a shot cleared off the line by Richie Paxton.
Benjamin went close again before Johnson was thwarted by a superb save by Shields keeper Niki Lawson.
Shields began to get a foothold in the game, and thought they had taken the lead through an own goal, but it was ruled out for an offside flag in the build-up.
Against the run of play, Ashington found themselves a goal to the good a minute later as Benjamin capitalised on a defensive error to fire home from close range.
Within minutes Ashington doubled their advantage as Taylor latched on to a cross to fire in from 15 yards, and the Colliers went into the half-time break two goals to the good.
After the break, Tony Stephenson was twice denied by Dryden before Shields had another goal chalked off, this time through Ramsey, after the referee spotted an infringement.
On 65 minutes Ashington extended their advantage as Benjamin was on hand to capitalise on an error by Lawson to tap in from close range.
With the game entering the final 10 minutes Benjamin completed his hat-trick from close range.
In the closing minutes, David Graham pulled a goal back when he curled a free-kick round the wall, before the same player fired home a penalty following a foul on Tony Coe to give some respectability to the final score.
