Shields veterans do themselves proud
SOUTH Shields Harriers made a flying start with several victories, but finished second to Crook in the points total after the opening North Eastern Veterans' Track and Field meeting at Monkton Stadium.
Lee Henry won the over-35 100m in 13.1 seconds with Jamie Scorer second in 13.2.
Craig Errington was third in 13.6, with Gary McAlinden fifth in 16.3 as Shields dominated the first event.
Henry completed a double in the 400m in 59.8, with his team-mate Paul Bainbridge second in 61 and Scorer fourth in 65.3.1.
Phil McCluskey finished second in the over-40 men's 400m in 60.0 with Tommy Brannon of North Shields first in 59.1.
Elaine Elliott was first in the women's over-35 100m in 15.6 and second in the 400m in 80.3, won by her colleague Linda Bone in 75.5.
Bone finished first in the 3000m in 12:45.2 from Wallsend's Louise Walker with 13:03.0.
Peter Walker, from the Shields club, finished first in the over-55 100m in 16.4, and in the 400m in 74.9, and was third in the 3000m in 12:19.4.
Bainbridge won the 3000m in 10:02.1 from Heaton's Dave Wright with 10:14.8.
Kevin Ayres was third in the over-45 men's 3000m in 10:57.9, with McAlinden fourth in the over-35 race in 12:44.0.
Effervescent Jarrow and Hebburn AC runner Don Butler duly reeled off a a double in the over-70 100m and 400m in 14.4 and 73.9 respectively.
Luke Adams prevailed after a close fight with Chris Muir in South Shields Harriers Prinsky Cup Five Miles Road Race Championships.
Adams, Muir and Chris McDonald were clear in the first mile along the promenade from the start near the Little Haven Hotel, but over the paths of the Leas towards Marsden, McDonald dropped off the pace.
Turning back from the Velvet Beds, Muir had a slight lead, but into the final mile Adams made a decisive break and entered the finish on the track in Gypsies Green Stadium 150m clear in 28:18. Paul Bainbridge finished third, ahead of McDonald.
Linda Bone, in 11th with 40:36, was the first woman from Elaine Elliott in 43:55, with Patricia White third in 49:46.
