Shieldsmen's run comes to an end
SOUTH Shields suffered their first defeat in four games as they went down to Durham Academy at the weekend.
The Wood Terrace side were looking to build on a tremendous win over title hopefuls South Northumberland, but came up short against Durham's young guns.
Batting first, the Academy posted a hefty total of 313-8. Singh (78)and Coughlin (57) were the destroyers, while there were cameos from Clark (30), Wood (36) and Harrison (37).
Shields's bowlers were made to work hard for their wickets with skipper Matthew Muchall 2-104 proving costly, as did Chris Watson with 2-69 and Shivraj Khenwar with 2-68.
In reply, Durham-contacted star Gordon Muchall did his best to give the Shieldsmen a chance of reaching their formidable target, weighing in with 103 before being bowled by Pringle.
However, he was rather short of support as the rest of the batting line-up failed to come to the party.
Skinner (40) and Jim Gaff (21 not out) did offer some resistance with the bat, but it was nowhere near enough for a Shields side, who were without the services of key players Phillip Bell, Chris Rainbow and Chris Dorothy.
In the end, the South Tynesiders came up 75 runs short as they claimed eight points, compared to Durham's 30.
