Simpson faces battle for spot

DANNY Simpson has admitted it could be a long time before he is playing again – even if he returns quickly from injury.

The Newcastle United right-back has been out since May after surgery on a ruptured tendon, and was told he faced a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

Simpson hopes to be available for action again from the middle of next month, but admits he faces a tough battle to win his place back.

The Magpies have started their Premier League season well, with new boy James Perch getting to grips with the right-back role, and Simpson knows that even when he returns to fitness, it could be a while before he gets a starting berth again.

Perch has slotted in well alongside Fabricio Colocinni and Mike Williamson in the United back four, with Ryan Taylor and Steven Taylor also capable of playing full-back.

"It's good to have that competition because sometimes you can get complacent," said Simpson. "Obviously now, as a defender, you can't because we've got a very good squad.

"It's a big challenge for me to come back and win my place now. I can't see the manager changing a successful team, so I know that it will be quite a while before I'm playing again.

"Whether my chances comes through injury, suspension or in a cup game, I have to take it with both hands.

"I'm the kind of person who wants it even more after a setback like I've had.

"I feel desperate to get back as soon as possible. I'm delighted the lads have started well and are picking up points – and I just want to be part of it now."
