Barton's a cast off!

JOEY Barton has started the long road back to fitness – and the midfielder has set his sights firmly on a New Year return.

Barton – who had surgery on his foot earlier this month – was this week back at Newcastle United's Benton training ground after a short break.

With the cast now off his right foot, luckless Barton – whose St James's Park career has been beset by injury – is ready to start his rehabilitation in earnest.

And the 27-year-old – out since last month's win over Plymouth Argyle – is hoping to be available to boss Chris Hughton in January.

Barton was given some time off by Hughton last week, and he was at Newbury racecourse to see his horse Electric Feel romp home in first place.

Now refreshed, Barton is working with the club's physios.

"Joey has been back this week and was all smiles after a short break," said a United source.

"He's back in rehab now, and has also had the cast removed from his foot.

"Things are looking up for him on the injury front, and he's hoping that he can make a return in January some time.

"He really wants to play some part in Newcastle's promotion challenge, and that is the goal he's set himself.

"He hopes that he can put the nightmare of the last few years behind him and have a fresh start in 2010."

* Newcastle United duo Jonas Gutierrez and Fabricio Coloccini have been called up for Argentina's friendly international against Spain in Madrid on November 14.
