French winger goes on trial at United
FRENCH winger Fabrice Pancrate has been handed the chance to win a deal with Newcastle United tonight.
The 29-year-old will be watched by Magpies boss Chris Hughton when he lines up for the reserves against Hartlepool United at St James's Park.
And Pancrate may not be the only new face to join the club before the end of next week, with Hughton hinting he could boost his squad with another loan signing.
The out-of-contract wide man has been on trial with Newcastle since last week after failing to secure moves to Sheffield United and Burnley already this season.
And the former Paris St Germain and Real Betis winger will get his big chance to show he is worth a contract when he lines up against Hartlepool's second string tonight.
Hughton revealed: "We had him for three days last week, and we need to take a look at him which we'll do in the reserves tonight.
"It's always difficult when somebody has only had three days of training at a time when some of the squad are away on international duty.
"We've been working in smaller groups, but we are keen to have a look."
Pancrate has scored 20 goals in 188 appearances in a career that has also seen him play for Le Mans and Sochaux.
Meanwhile, with the loan market about to close for business until next year, Hughton knows time is running out if he wants to add to his squad before the busy festive period.
The loan window slams shut at the end of next week, and Hughton added: "I don't anticipate bringing anybody in – but people who we are interested in, and have been interested in, may well become available before the window shuts.
"What we plan to do is assess our options. I wouldn't rule it out completely."
