Jonas is committed to Toon cause
NEWCASTLE United's Jonas Gutierrez is fully committed to the Newcastle United cause, according to Chris Hughton.
And the winger – said by his agent to have an "option" to leave in the next transfer window – has been backed to translate his international form for Argentina to the Championship, where he has struggled to make an impression since returning from injury.
As Roma were last week linked with a move for Gutierrez, but Hughton – who yesterday insisted he does not have to sell – is adamant he is staying at St James's Park.
Asked if Gutierrez had a clause allowing him to leave, Hughton told the Gazette: "Certainly not that I'm aware of."
Gutierrez – signed from Real Mallorca last year – is one of just four players all but guaranteed a place in Diego Maradona's World Cup squad.
Yet the 26-year-old – who was sidelined for a month with a hamstring injury – has struggled for form this season, though Hughton is confident he remains committed to the club, despite reported interest from continental clubs.
Hughton went on: "What Jonas is, is a quality player. With all players, you have your highs and lows.
"He's had the emotions of going away with Argentina, when it looked like they might not quality, and then qualifying.
"There's been lots of highs and lows. He's also had three international breaks where he's been away.
"But Jonas is a quality player, and as far as I'm aware he's delighted to be here, and fighting for the cause the same as everybody else."
