Peter's Toon talk will hit 'em for six!
GEORDIE soccer legend Peter Beardsley is to be a guest speaker at South Shields Cricket Club's annual dinner.
The event, one of the social highlights of South Tyneside's sporting calendar, will be held as usual in the Hedworth Hall on Friday, November 20, and is being sponsored by the Arndale Group for the 21st successive year.
Club secretary Jeff Marshall said "We are thrilled that Peter has agreed to entertain our guests.
"He is one of those very special sportsmen who won admiration and affection in equal measure.
"Very few footballers have reached the same heights and had such a breadth of experience. And, of course, he remains close to the soccer scene through his work for the Youth Academy at St James's Park.
"He has also established himself as a speaker of immense appeal and is in huge demand."
As well as Newcastle United, much-travelled Beardsley played for nine other English League clubs including Manchester United and Liverpool and took his skills to Canada and Australia.
The artful striker won 59 caps for England in a decade-long international career and was a member of the World Cup squads in 1986 and 1990.
At Liverpool, he won two League Championship medals and an FA Cup medal and in 1995 was awarded the MBE for services to sport.
Supporting him at the dinner will be Dave Adams whose current affairs comedy has made him a firm favourite on the after-dinner circuit and whose skills are such that he now gives tuition to would-be stand-up comics.
Said Jeff: "They are bound to make a terrific double act."
