United weigh up bid for Cameroon man
NEWCASTLE United are weighing up a bid for Geremi's Cameroon team-mate Stephane Mbia.
But French club Rennie's valuation of the defensive midfielder, who can also play at right-back, could scupper Kevin Keegan's hopes of signing the 22-year-old.
Everton are already understood to have had a 6m bid for Mbia rejected, while he has also interested Arsenal.
Newcastle owner Mike Ashley is willing to bankroll a "wow" signing this summer, but Mbia does not fall into that category.
And, as such, it could be a stretch for United to top Everton's sizeable bid.
Keegan and the club's recruitment team of Dennis Wise and Tony Jimenez are also looking at another holding midfielder – Udinese's Switzerland international Gokhan Inler.
In another development, sources on the south coast suggest Newcastle are close to signing one of Southampton's promising young players.
The player's identity, however, is being kept under wraps until the deal is complete.
