Woodwork denies Andy an England winner

NEWCASTLE striker Andy Carroll was denied from adding to his international goals tally by the woodwork last night.

The Magpies frontman scored twice earlier this season for the Three Lions' Under-21s as they beat Macedonia 6-3.

But he couldn't find the net against Portugal at Wembley on Saturday, and drew another blank last night in a goalless draw with Lithuania in Vilnius.

Carroll almost gave England a dream start, but put his header just wide in the 11th minute.

In the 20th minute it was the turn of the woodwork to save the home nation when Carroll's 20-yard shot beat Vytautas Cerniauskas but rebounded off an upright.

But a minute later England were forced to make a change when the injured Gibbs left the action to be replaced by Bertrand.

A minute before the interval, Carroll almost finished off a neat move, but volleyed across the face of the goal.

Pearce's side continued where they left at the start of the second-half and Muamba's close-range shot flashed narrowly wide.

England should have gone ahead in the 50th minute Carroll went round the goalkeeper, but crashed his shot against the crossbar.

The Under-21s remain unbeaten so far in their European Championships qualifying group, and now face leaders Greece at Wembley next March.
