James reveals why turned down Cats
DAVID James revealed the desire to be a first-choice was behind his decision to snub Sunderland and sign for Championship side Bristol City.
The Black Cats had been in talks with the England keeper after Craig Gordon was ruled out of the start of the season after breaking his arm.
James would have been an ideal short-term solution, but Gordon was always going to be Sunderland's No1 when he returned to fitness, which would have meant the 39-year-old veteran playing second fiddle.
That – and a desire not to uproot his family – saw James sign a one-year deal with City yesterday.
He said: "I've had offers to stay in the Premier League but it is more important that I play football – which I love – for the right club and be a family man.
"The club is ambitious and that's what I am. The south west has not had a club in the Premier League and that needs to change."
