Teenager Remie on his Toon dream
SOUTH Tyneside teenager Remie Streete is desperate to fulfil his early promise and play for Newcastle United.
The 15-year-old – who is on the club's books and is set to join full-time when he leaves school next year – was this week presented with the inaugural Jack Hixon award by legend Alan Shearer.
And Streete, of South Shields, is looking to follow in the footsteps of another of the winners at Monday night's Sport Newcastle dinner, defender Steven Taylor.
Taylor, handed the Sports Personality of the Year trophy, came up through the ranks at United, and Streete, whose father Floyd played for Wolverhampton Wanderers, is now determined to make the most of his undoubted potential.
"Steven Taylor's a few years older than me, and hopefully I can follow in his footsteps and play in the first team," Streete told the Gazette.
"My dad was a footballer as well. He played for Wolves, Derby and Reading, and he played in Holland as well.
"It was great to get the Jack Hixon Award, and especially to be the first person to get it.
"It's a great honour, and it means a lot to have Alan Shearer present it to me.
"I've just got to keep working hard, and keep improving as a player.
"I'd like to play like Rio Ferdinand, though obviously I'm not as good yet!
"I've played at St James's Park once in a training match, and I'd love to play there again. It's my dream to play for the club."
Streete's mother, Denise Harris, said: "I'm extremely proud of Remie – he's a great kid, and very humble. He's very grounded, and the best place for him is Newcastle United."
