Town's relegation worries are eased

HEBBURN Town boosted their survival hopes with a deserved 2-1 win over relegation rivals Darlington RA.

Manager Rob Marsden had called the game a six-pointer in the build-up, and it was his players who came out on top to put some distance between themselves and the drop zone.

Hebburn remain third-bottom of the Northern League Division Two table, but they are now seven points ahead of second-bottom RA.

They had to do it the hard way, however, coming from a goal behind.

Hebburn had looked the better side in the first half, but Karl McMann failed to convert any of his four chances.

And they were made to pay on the stroke of half-time when Tony Abel capitalised on some slack marking to drive home from 10 yards.

But with debutant Paul Catto pulling the strings in midfield, Hebburn were soon back in the game.

Just two minutes after the interval, Colin Nesbit's deep cross was met by Gary McCartney, who volleyed home.

Shaun Carroll was then denied twice, and hit the post, before Anthony Myers put Hebburn 2-1 ahead from close range.

There was still time for Carroll to fire a shot which hit one post, rebounded along the line and came back off the opposite upright, as Hebburn comfortably picked up all three vital points.
