United book semi spot

SHIELDS United made it to the semi-finals of the Durham Minor Trophy after an impressive 3-0 win against a physical Houghton Town.

United threw centre-half Jonny Gage up front to partner Kyle Yorston, who made his first start in three months, and the two were a handful all afternoon.

Man of the match Mark Davies set up Yorston on the half hour to slip the ball past the advancing Houghton keeper.

Houghton's aerial presence was always a threat and keeper Shaun Newbrook made a great save at 1-0.

Aaron Kah was a constant danger for Shields, and it was his cross that Gage headed on for Yorston to grab his second of the game.

United brought on youngsters David Birch and Alex Chapman, who have been promoted from the Under-18s, and both settled well.

On 85 minutes, a Davies cross was collected by full-back Carl Rutherford and he grabbed the third to book their semi-final spot against Winlaton Vulcan Inn.

Manager Gareth Allen said: "Some of our football was excellent, and the pace we kept the ball moving meant we wore Houghton down.

"I know Winlaton will be a totally different test in two weeks, and we already know keeper Shaun Newbrook will be suspended, which is a major problem, but we will have to deal with it.

"There's a cup final up for grabs, and we want to be there."
