Villagers too slick for weakened City

WHITBURN eased to victory over a weakened Durham City side in the Warmseal Durham Senior League on Saturday.

Stuart Walker and Ross Carty got the Villagers off to a bright start with an opening partnership of 105, before Walker (58) played an uncharacteristically loose shot and presented Phil Parker with a simple catch off the bowling of Bryan Stone in the 20th over.

Carty (46) followed in the next over off the bowling of Thomas O'Neil.

However, the Whitburn batsmen soon resumed control with Aden Bannister and Andy Turns adding a further 111 at better than a run a ball.

Turns looked in good touch, hitting 11 fours and two sixes as he took advantage of a surprisingly attacking field before picking out Mark Woodhead at mid-wicket to become Stone's second victim with 62 runs to his name.

The declaration soon followed when Bannister brought up his maiden half century to leave the Universal Sealants-sponsored side with a score of 237-3 in just 41 overs.

City looked to dig in for a draw after tea, but Tony Greaves removed both their openers to leave them at 43-2.

Mark Hopkinson offered Durham their best chance of staying in the game before he was caught at slip by Paul Cook off the bowling of Walker for 37, before Cook made light work of the middle and late order batsmen.

City skipper Woodhead (21) was the only batsman to offer any resistance as Cook claimed five wickets in an 11-over spell as the Villagers secured a 98-run victory and a maximum 30-point return with 10 overs to spare.

This win followed a disapponting performance at Eppleton in the Twenty20 on Friday night.

An unbeaten 57 from Paul Shields was the one highlight of a below-par score of 125-9. Eppleton chased down their target inside 16 overs.
