Villages to finsh with a flourish?
WHITBURN'S hopes of winning the Warmseal Durham Senior League came to a sudden end on Monday when they failed to defeat Marsden.
If the Villagers had beaten Marsden, tomorrow's final game of the season at Hetton Lyons would have decided the destiny of the title.
But whatever happens tomorrow, it will be the Lyons who receive the championship trophy, after their victory over Seaham Harbour on Monday.
The Villagers, who have won 10 games this summer and only lost one, will however finish in the top three for the fifth successive season.
Whether they finish second or third will depend on the result of their game with the Lyons and Burnmoor's game against to Horden.
The two sides played out a draw when they met at the Village Ground earlier this season.
Lyons' Sri Lankan professional, Surappulige Malinga, top scored with 61 as his side posted a total of 196, with John Dunn claiming 5-38 in his only game of the season.
Neil Ayre led the Villagers' reply with a score of 44, but after his dismissal the run chase lost momentum, and Whitburn settled for the draw, finishing on 141-8.
The Universal Sealants-sponsored side name an unchanged side for tomorrow's game.
The end of the season has come at the wrong time for Ross Carty.
The wicketkeeper-batsman suffered with injury earlier in the season, but has come into form recently.
The left-hander was top scorer in both games last weekend, with scores of 67 not out and 42 not out against Philadelphia and Marsden respectively.
With Lyndsay Cullen and Chris Wood both returning to Australia at the end of the season, Carty will be looking for a similar performance tomorrow as he looks to claim a position higher up the batting order next year.
But, Cullen's shoes will be difficult to fill.
He may not have claimed a second Senior League championship medal to add to the one he picked up with South Shields in 2006, but he has been top scorer in his two seasons with the club, as well as proving more than useful with the ball and in the field.
Whitburn's season ends tomorrow, but Sunday sees the region's leading Under-21 cricketers contest the KV Computer Cup final at the Village Ground.
The Dukes North East Premier League are up against the Wellstream Northumberland Tyneside Senior League in a game that starts at 1:30pm.
