Whitburn felled by visitors' bowlers
WHITBURN were knocked off their perch at the top of the Warmseal Durham Senior League on Saturday when they suffered a four-wicket defeat at the hands of Felling.
The Universal Sealants-sponsored side batted first, but never got on top of the Gateshead side's impressive bowling line-up.
Paul Leonard and Ross Loiacono set the tone for the day when they conceded only 10 runs off the first nine overs on a dry wicket.
Their tight bowling was rewarded when Leonard claimed the wicket of Stuart Walker (9) with 34 runs on the board in the 17th over, which brought Aden Bannister to the wicket to join Neil Ayre.
The pair put on 70 runs for the second wicket, with Ayre showing some neat footwork against left-arm spinner Anthony Trotter before he skied a ball from Leonard with 54 runs to his name.
Loiacono returned to the attack and claimed the wickets of Bannister (31) and Andy Turns (3) in quick succession, with Turns falling to a smart return catch, to leave the scoreboard showing 113-4 after 38 overs.
Whitburn needed some quick runs, but Trotter strangled their middle order, claiming the wickets of Peter Marshall (11), Paul Shields (12), Jake Fowler (6) and Paul Sculpher (7) as they posted a score of 172-8 from their 55-over allocation.
Tony Greaves troubled the batsmen and claimed three wickets, but with Neil Johnson missing and Paul Cook a late withdrawal with an ankle injury, the Villagers leaked runs as Felling chased down their target.
Chris Goudie (25) and Loiacono (29 not out) made useful contributions, but Phil Taylor was the pick of the batsmen with 74 runs to his name before he was caught behind off Greaves's bowling when the game was almost won.
It was left to Loiacono and Leonard – who had set the tone for the game earlier in the day – to see the visitors home.
