Win puts Hebburn back on track

HEBBURN bounced back to winning ways in dramatic fashion in Northumberland League Division Two against the Civil Service.

Hebburn were put in to bat after losing the toss, and were quickly reduced to 7-2.

However, Bob Tulip and Brian McVittie ground out a partnership of 69 to get the innings going before McVittie went for (33) after a good catch by Waite.

Darren Simpson then joined Tulip and manufactured a purposeful (26).

Tulip was eventually spun out by Mulligan for 67.

Simon Whitehead (25 not out) and David Berry (26) then kept up the momentum as they guided Hebburn to 205-7.

Civil Service were struggling when David Berry ran out Lowe in the first over.

Mark Carmichael then removed Creed and Adam in quick succession.

The Service were really struggling when Simpson removed the dangerous Ward for 20 as they were reduced to 50-4.

However, the arrival of Terry Waite started to change the game.

He found able support in Reddie (19) and Jaka (20).

Jordan Stephenson took two wickets to stem the flow of runs, but with six overs left the Service needed just 21 to win with four wickets remaining.

Excellent bowling from captain Nick Whitehead, and brother Simon, put a stranglehold on the runs.

In an exciting finale, the Civils required seven to win off the final over.

The pressure told when Neil Wright brilliantly run out Waite off the fifth ball of the over for an outstanding 80.

With five required of the final ball the Civil Service still had a chance, but Simon Whitehead completed a wonderful over by clean bowling Mulligan, to seal a four-run victory for Hebburn.

Hebburn's home fixture against Ulgham next week has now become the club's biggest game for many years with a win guaranteeing promotion.

Hebburn's development team posted 203-8 against Ryhope on Sunday.

Michael Collins (76) and Brian McVittie (47) were the main contributors with the bat.

Ryhope reached their target for the loss of six wickets. Jamie Lawson picked up three wickets for Hebburn, while Daniel Jenkins took the catch of the innings.
