Hebburn Central, the new library and community sports facility opened in July last year, has won a RIBA North East Award, from the Royal Institute of British Architects.

The building, designed by FaulknerBrowns Architects, is the first phase of an ambitious regeneration project led by South Tyneside Council.

The awards jury were impressed with the project being “procured under the SCAPE framework and delivered in an eye watering tight timescale”.

They added: “The fact that the building was achieved within programme and to a modest budget reflects the skill and experience of the design team.”

The jury was also impressed with the “envisioned client”, adding: “that coupled with the abilities of the architects has resulted in a project that is exemplary in its boldness, use of unconventional materials and has created a new identity for the area.

“There is no doubt Hebburn Central will enrich the lives of the community and boost confidence to continue with the wider regeneration project.”

The winners will now be considered for a highly-coveted RIBA National Award.
