A DANCE teacher’s dream to own her own studio has now become a reality.

For years Karen Whitfield, owner of McKenzie School of Dance in Jarrow, aspired to having a place she could call her own.

Now, after months of hard work transforming a property in the town’s Viking Precinct, the 35-year-old’s dream has finally become a reality as she launches Attic Dance and Fitness Studio.

Mrs Whitfield, who was helped in her endeavour by husband Paul who carried out the renovation work, said: “I can’t believe it, this is a dream come true.

“I have been dancing myself since the age of three and owning my own dance studio has always been a lifetime ambition of mine – even more so when I started teaching.”

It has taken Mrs Whitfield two years of searching to find what she has described as the “perfect place” to base her school.

As well as her own dance school, a range of fitness classes are also being run from the venue including karate, self-defence, baby yoga, baby massage and boys-only street dance.

Mrs Whitfield, from Fellgate, Jarrow, added: “My dancers love it. They have followed the dream with me and think it’s amazing they now have a place they can call their own.

“I’ve had so much support from my pupils and my family especially my husband Paul and daughter Scarlett.”

Up until now, McKenzie School of Dance which teaches tap, modern, ballet and freestyle, from those aged 18-months upwards, held classes in a variety of community centres and church halls.

The two-studio venue will host its first ever summer school starting next week where youngsters will be able to learn the art of different dance styles.

The following week a range of activities will take place including a princess-themed dance class.

For information on the classes available and session times, contact the studio on 07932 456 646 between 9am and 9pm.
