A DIGITAL rainbow beams towards South Tyneside as part of a stunning artwork to herald the 2012 Olympics.

American artist Yvette Mattern’s Global Rainbow was switched on at St Mary’s Lighthouse in Whitley Bay, North Tyneside, last night, and it will shine out for the next five nights.

Its powerful light can be seen on this side of the river, as this photograph shows.

Gazette reader Adrian Jackson, of Lawe Road, South Shields, sent in this photograph, taken from the Mill Dam in South Shields.

The display has previously only been seen in Germany, France and the United States, and was initially created to celebrate Martin Luther King Day in 2009.

It can be seen between 6pm and midnight.
