A SOUTH Tyneside cinema is out to prove it’s so much more.
A series of one-off screenings of staged events will be coming to Cineworld in Abingdon Way, Boldon Colliery.
Plays, ballets, operas and concerts will be beamed live to the cinema from across the world.
Highlights include a live screening of former Doctor Who star David Tennant in the title role of William Shakespeare’s Richard II, at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon, at 7pm on November 13.
Famous operas such as Don Giovanni and Turandot will be screened live from the Royal Opera House in London, over the next few months.
National Theatre Live’s season will also make it onto the big screen, including performances of Frankenstein, starring Benedict Cumberbatch, on October 31 and November 21, both at 7pm.
Shakespeare’s Globe, on the bank of the River Thames in London, will also be screened in the cinema, with plays such as Twelfth Night, The Taming of the Shrew and Henry V being shown this month.
The cinema’s deputy general manager, Michala Berry, said: “A cinema can show more than films, and the line-up we’ve got over the next few months is fantastic.
“People can see sold-out West End shows and Shakespeare live from The Globe right here in Boldon.
“The screenings have proven popular so far and we hope people continue to make the most of them.”
Tickets for all screenings are on sale now. For a full list of events or to book, go to www.cineworld.co.uk or call the box office on 0871 200 2000.
