POPULAR ... last years South Shields parade entertains the crowds.

A WEEKEND of world-class entertainment has been promised after the full line-up for the Mouth of the Tyne Festival was announced.

A spectacular parade, fireworks, street performers from around the world, a Tropicana-themed pageant and live music performances will wow crowds on both sides of the river next month.

Supported by South and North Tyneside Councils, Kier, TyneMet College and Port of Tyne, the festival will take place from Thursday, July 7, to Sunday, July 10, in Tynemouth and South Shields.

South Shields’s opening parade will include a spectacular performance and a fireworks finale.

Close-Act, the Dutch masters of street theatre, will present an unforgettable night procession featuring weird and wonderful performers, stilt walkers, dancers and live music, taking spectators through the past, the present and into the future.

South Tyneside Council leader, Iain Malcolm, said: “Our sensational seafront is once again the setting for this weekend of world-class entertainment.

“Featuring an amazing mix of live music, comedy and street theatre, the Mouth of the Tyne Festival is a truly fantastic family-friendly event not to be missed.”

Musical highlights at Tynemouth Priory and Castle include festival headliners – queen of British soul Beverley Knight, pop sensation Alexandra Burke and British pop band Scouting for Girls, as well as punk pop band the Buzzcocks, Neville Staple and His Band and front man of the Daintees, Martin Stephenson.

North Tyneside elected mayor, Linda Arkley, added: “The Mouth of the Tyne Festival offers plenty of entertainment that the whole family can enjoy.

“Tourism is worth £245m to the North Tyneside economy, and this festival is a key event in our calendar.”
