SOME of the biggest names in pop descended on South Shields this evening to play for more than 6,000 fans at Sound Waves 2013.

The gig, in Bents Park, Sea Road, welcomed headliners McFly and Little Mix, including South Shields girls Perrie Edwards and Jade Thirlwall.

The concert also saw a performances by fellow South Shields X Factor champ Joe McElderry, Britain’s Got Talent finalists Luminites and boyband The Vamps.

Excitement was high backstage for 22-year-old Joe, from Westoe, who was performing at the venue for the second time.

He played to a crowd of 20,000 people in 2011, and returned today to play a string of crowd pleasers, including Wide Awake, Ambitions, a cover of Get Lucky, and Don’t Stop Believing.

Before he went on stage, he said: “It’s really exciting and the crowd sound incredible.

“I think it’s really nice to be here with Jade and Perrie as well.

“It’s great that we’ve got a festival like this in South Tyneside.

“We’ve got the free concerts but to have a big festival like this is brilliant.”

Little Mix, who also feature Jesy Nelson and Leigh-Anne Pinnock, played in South Shields for the first time since the homecoming episode of the X Factor, when they sang at the Temple Park Centre.

The crowd went wild as the girls performed songs including How Ya Doin?, DNA, Wings, and En Vogue’s Don’t Let Go.

Before they took to the stage, 20-year-old Jade, from Laygate, said: “We’re so excited, we’re nervous, all our family and friends are here and it’s going to kick off!

“We keep welling up. I just heard Joe sing ‘South Shields’ and I felt like crying. It’s a special one.”

The girls have been hard at work in the studio on their second album.

Perrie, 20, who recently got engaged to One Direction’s Zayn Malik, smiled as she showed off her engagement ring.

She said: “I’m very happy, I’m riding on cloud nine. I’m excited to get on and dance a little!”

Pop band McFly shared the headline spot with Little Mix to play a selection of songs from their 10-year career, including Five Colours In Her Hair, Obviously, Lies and Shine A Light.

Before the gig, Tom said: “It’s really good to be here, we’re very excited.”

Speaking about their fans sticking with them, Danny said: “The loyalty is amazing. We feel really lucky and we can’t thank everyone enough.”
