A GROUP of schoolboys will fight it out representing South Tyneside in a battle of the bands as they attempt to break into the music industry.
Aqua-Lung, a rock and heavy metal band, from Hebburn Compressive School, have reached the final of the Sound Wave Music competition, which will take place in January.
The band will have 15 minutes to perform in front of a panel of industry experts and a crowd of music lovers at Newcastle’s 02 academy.
Band member Kyle Stevenson, 14, said: “We can‘t wait to compete, we are practising everyday at lunchtimes as well as before and after school.
“We’re definitely all getting more nervous as it gets closer. We’ve performed in competitions before but nothing as big as this.”
The boys, who all live in Hebburn, finished second, only three points behind the eventual winner, in a smaller battle of the bands competition held at Newcastle College earlier this year, but hope to go one better this time.
Along with Kyle, Aiden Matthews, James Bell and Daniel Scott have been attending school at 7am every morning to cram in the practice ahead of the final.
The Sound Wave Music Competition is one of the biggest music competition’s in the North East of England, and Aqua-Lung made it to the final 12 from over 300 other entries.
The finalists will perform on the main stage at the O2 Academy Newcastle where the likes of Rizzle Kicks, Matt Cardle and Jason Derulo are scheduled to perform later in the year.
The winner will take away a range of prizes including a full day’s recording at Gateshead’s Broadwater Recording Studios and radio airplay across the North East.
The final will take place on January 25. Doors open at 6pm and tickets cost £7.55. Anyone who wants to book can go to www.o2academynewcastle.co.uk or call the box office on 0844 477 2000.
