LITTLE Mix’s Jade Thirlwall kicked off her birthday celebrations by starting the Boxing Day Dip.
Jade, who turned 21 today, kicked off the annual event for South Shields charity Cancer Connections.
Jade is a patron of the charity, based in Harton Lane, which offers advice and therapies to cancer patients and their families.
The Little Mix star, of Laygate, South Shields, said: “I’d love to be able to do the dip myself but my mam wouldn’t let me in case I caught a cold and was ill for my birthday party.
“It’s great to be here though - I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.
“It’s lovely to see everyone supporting the charity. The community spirit in South Shields is brilliant.”
The Boxing Day Dip, held at Littlehaven Beach, sees fundraisers brave the icy waters of the North Sea to bring in money for the charity.
Another dip for Jarrow’s St Clare’s Hospice, which offers palliative care to the people of South Tyneside with life-limiting illnesses, took place an hour later at Sandhaven Beach.
