MUSIC lovers in South Tyneside enjoyed a party in the park as mega-selling artists took centre stage at the summer Soundwaves concert on Saturday night.
The open-air concert at Bents Park, South Shields, proved a huge hit with South Shields’ very own Lulu James getting the event off to a soulful start before chart-toppers Gabrielle, All Saints and Texas wowed the crowds with a string of their best-loved tracks.
Heavy rain lashed down as rising star Lulu – fresh from a tour performing across Europe – got the musical spectacular kicked off in style.
The damp weather didn’t stop her warming up the lively audience for the hours of entertainment ahead.
Lulu serenaded fans with tracks including Closer and Sweetest Thing to earn a roaring response from her hometown crowd.
About 3,000 fans turned out to the Soundwaves event – the finale of a summer of music festivals at Bents Park organised by South Tyneside Council.
Gabrielle had fans singing along to her multi-million-selling hits – including her 1993 smash hit Dreams , which launched her into superstardom.
Award-winning band All Saints made a stop off in South Shields on a comeback trail that has already seen them perform live at the V Festival.
Classic tracks such as Never Ever and I Know Where It’s At kept the crowds on their feet.
Scottish supergroup Texas were last but certainly not least – as they lit up the borough night sky with an energetic display.
Lead singer Sharleen Spiteri was delighted with the warm reception she and the band received during their debut appearance in the borough.
She said: “This was our first time playing in South Tyneside, but we always get a great reception in the North East.”
Gabrielle, who is celebrating more than 20 years at the top, added: “I’ve never performed with any of the artists on the SoundWaves line up before, but I was really excited to be sharing the bill with them.
“It really was an amazing day.”
