HEBBURN star Neil Grainger is going on the run in memory of his mum.
The 34-year-old, who plays pub singer Gervaise in the hit BBC2 sitcom, is taking on the Great North Run on Sunday to raise money for Cancer Research UK.
Neil is running the 13.1-mile course from Newcastle to South Shields in memory of his mum, Janet, who passed away in 2006, aged 59.
Janet had been diagnosed with cervical cancer about a year-and-a-half before she died.
Neil said: “My mam died from cervical cancer, and in the seven years since she’s died, they’ve now got a vaccine against cervical cancer.
“That’s clear evidence that Cancer Research works and it’s a cause that’s very close to my heart.
“Cancer Research is the best way to fight cancer.”
This is the third time Neil has taken on the race.
He’s already come in with times of 2hrs 5mins and 2hrs 9mins, and this year, he’s hoping to run it in under two hours.
Neil said: “I’ve been running a lot more this year and I’ve been trying to get out as much as possible.
“I did 10 miles the other day and it hurt my knees quite a bit, but I’m hoping I’m in better shape and can get under the two-hour mark.
“I just want to raise as much money as possible.”
He added: “I wasn’t sure if I was going to be able to run it at first because of the filming schedule for Hebburn, but thankfully it worked out.
“The same people sponsor me every year and the support I’ve been given is brilliant.
“I’m really grateful.”
