CRINGE-inducing number ones are depressingly commonplace in today’s single charts, and this year has produced none worse than Avicii’s monster hit Wake Me Up.
It’s hard to know how to react when you hear a record that bad.
Do you laugh, or do you scream and cry at the fact it’s currently outselling literally every other song in the country?
Even more depressing is the fact that much of the Swedish DJ’s debut album drags out exactly the same formula - namely taking a bland guitar-based singalong and slapping on a kickdrum before swarming it with thumping Ibiza-style synths.
It’s the type of thing we routinely ridicule every time Eurovision comes around; only repeated on a loop to add to the mindlessness.
Thankfully, he starts mixing things up a little in the album’s not-completely-awful second half, but even that’s little more than half-baked, disposable dross. 3/10. AW
