JUSTIN Vernon is the man behind beloved indie-folk outfit Bon Iver, but as recently as this week the Wisconsin songwriter has hinted he may never return to his principle guise.
If that is to be the case, fans will at least have a fallback option in Volcano Choir, a worthy side-project through which Vernon exercises some of his more conventional quiet-loud tendencies.
The volume may have increased, but this second album is cut from the same sonic cloth as Bon Iver’s wondrous self-titled, conveying similar sensations of warmth, beauty and subtlety.
Whether or not these songs are mere leftovers is unclear, but the likes of Alaskans and Dancepack are sure to delight Vernon’s devotees, regardless of their origins. 7/10. AW
