TWO singers from South Tyneside are celebrating after being endorsed by a top band.

The Futureheads tweeted a link to May Arcade’s Geordie version of Call Me Maybe, calling it the “greatest cover version of all time”.

The Hounds Of Love singers, who come from Sunderland, told their Twitter followers the search for the best cover version was over, before directing them to the video of the girls’ version of the Carly Rae Jepsen tune.

May Arcade, made up of Jarrow cousins Sophie Vaughan and Leanne Orr, both 24, could barely contain their excitement when they spotted the tweet.

Sophie, a journalism student at Northumbria University, said: “It’s crazy. We’re both massive Futureheads fans, so I’m a little bit shocked to be honest.

“I can’t believe it.”

Sophie started playing guitar and singing with Leanne, who works in search engine optimisation, four years ago, and they formed May Arcade a year ago.

The girls’ song, Call Me Da’lin, has reached just under three million hits on video-sharing website YouTube.

Sophie said: “We can’t believe how quickly the hits are going up.

“We got a lot of attention at first, and we thought that it would have died down by now, but it’s still ticking up all the time.

“It’s so great and we’re still getting loads of really supportive messages.”

At Christmas, May Arcade posted a video of themselves singing a Geordie version of Eartha Kitt’s Santa Baby.

They were asked to perform the song, Santa Pet, at the Christmas lights switch-ons in Newcastle and Durham.

Sophie added: “We’re working on some new stuff at the minute and we’re going to be uploading a new video soon, but we’re not sure what yet.

“We have a lot of fun doing the Geordie covers and if we do any, we’ll be uploading them, but that’s not all we do.

“We do a lot of normal covers and we’ve been writing our own songs too, so it could be one of them.”
