STARS ... All Saints, above, are heading to South Tyneside. So are, insets, from top, Gabrielle, Texas, 10cc, Shayne Ward and B*witched.

A GALAXY of stars, whose careers span five decades, are coming together for a spectacular summer of music in South Tyneside.

Texas, All Saints, Gabrielle, 10cc and Heather Small and are among the acts who will be heading to the region for the return of the South Tyneside Summer Festival and Sound Waves 2014.

Sound Waves, being held at Bents Park, South Shields on Saturday August 23, will feature Scottish super group Texas, who stormed the charts with a string of hits, including Say What You Want, I Don’t Want A Lover and Black Eyed Boy, chart-topping girl group All Saints and multi-platinum selling and Brit award-winning singer/songwriter Gabrielle.

The acts will be joined by South Tyneside’s own rising star, soul singer Lulu James.

Gabrielle, who shot to fame with her No1 songs Dreams and Rise, is delighted to be making her first appearance in the borough.

She said: “I don’t think I’ve ever been to South Shields before, and I’ve never performed with the other acts either, so I am really looking forward to it. I can’t wait to get on stage and perform.”

Despite having a career which has spanned more than 20 years, Gabrielle told the Gazette that she’s still amazed young people know the lyrics to her hits.

She said: “It’s incredible when you see the crowds singing along. I think, gosh their parents and grandparents probably listened to me in the 90s, and yet they know all of the words.

“Never in a million years would I have thought I’d still be performing like this two decades later. It’s amazing and I feel so lucky.”

Gabrielle and the bands will be joined by South Tyneside’s own rising star, soul singer Lulu James.

Before this ticketed event, music lovers will have the chance to see a whole host of live performances for free, as part of the South Tyneside Summer Festival 2014.

Highlights in this year’s festival, which runs from June until the end of August, include a series of outdoor concerts in Bents Park, which will run over three consecutive Sundays in July.

These concerts, which are open to all ages, will be headlined by pop stars Shayne Ward and B*witched (July 13), ’70s hit makers 10cc (July 20) and M People singer Heather Small (July 27).

They will be supported by a host of North East and UK acts, including South Tyneside group The Waiters (July 13) and leading rock covers band UK Rock Legends (July 20).

The Sunday concert series forms part of a packed programme of events for the festival, which also includes live music at the Amphitheatre in Sea Road, South Shields, every Thursday and Saturday during June, a Proms in the Park concert at South Marine Park on July 6 and brass band performances at various locations throughout July and August.

The festival’s renowned carnival-style parade through South Shields will also return on July 5, this time with a Get Active theme, followed by a family fun day with more live music and entertainment on July 6 and the new Kids Fun-Fest programme running through August.

Both Sound Waves and the South Tyneside Summer Festival are being organised by South Tyneside Council, with support from a number of sponsors and partners, including Colmans, Dicksons, Port of Tyne, Minchella & Co and Ocean Beach Pleasure Park.

Coun Alan Kerr, deputy leader of South Tyneside Council, said: “Sound Waves 2013 was a huge success, with thousands turning out to see live performances by Little Mix and McFly.

“We’re delighted to have secured such high-profile acts as Texas, All Saints and Gabrielle for this year’s line-up and look forward to welcoming them and South Tyneside’s own Lulu James to the borough.

“We’re confident that Sound Waves will again serve as a great complement to the free music on offer at the South Tyneside Summer Festival, including the headline performances by Shayne Ward, B*Witched, 10cc and Heather Small.”
