Painter’s landscapes a Lake District hit

LAKELAND VIEWS ... Graham Borthwicks paintings are popular in the Lake District.

A PAINTER from South Tyneside is proving popular on the other side of the Pennines.

Graham Borthwick, who runs Brush Strokes gallery in Whitburn, has recently branched out and started to sell his landscapes in the Lake District.

The 53-year-old took some of his work to the Lakeland Art Gallery in Grasmere to see if the store would stock them.

And within minutes of walking into the shop he made his first sale, after a customer took a liking to his Mist Over Coniston landscape.

Now the artist has four paintings in the gallery, and is in talks with four more potential stockists.

Mr Borthwick, who lives in Whitburn, said: “I couldn’t believe it but I am delighted. The owner of the gallery said it was the quickest sale he had ever made.

“I went over in November to get some pictures for the basis of my paintings, and had intended to go back in January to try to sell them.

“But whenever I put them up in the shop here, they kept getting bought!

“Eventually I thought I had to go over, so I did and I couldn’t be happier with the outcome.”

As well as painting landscapes of the Lake District and his native North East, Mr Borthwick also creates modern and abstract art, which is on sale at Brush Strokes, in East Street.

And he has prints of his work available to display in local cafés and businesses.
