HE’S entertained South Tynesiders young and old for 25 years. But the borough has said goodbye to the one and only, Tommy the Trumpeter.
For quarter of a century, Ray Spencer has been putting on the red, gold and blue suit to entertain people as his alter ego.
He’s received ‘thank you’ messages from across the globe and become an institution in our small part of the world.
However, all good things must come to an end, and yesterday saw the final Tommy’s Party for kids at the amphitheatre on South Shields seafront.
As the man himself says: “Tommy has been a massive part of my life for so long and even though I am hanging up my hat, I know I will always be known as Tommy.
“The way the people have taken Tommy to their hearts is so overwhelming – it’s just great to know Tommy hasn’t just touched the lives of people here in the borough, but also around the world.
“It is sad to be saying goodbye to Tommy, but after 25 summers, the time is right.
“I want to take the opportunity to say a huge ‘thank you’ to everyone for their support over the years, and for taking Tommy the Trumpeter to their hearts.”
Thanks for all the memories Tommy – you’ve made a lot of people very happy!
