Food lovers are gearing up for a weekend of gastronomic delights in South Tyneside.
From Saturday to Monday, Bents Park, in Sea Road, South Shields, will become a smorgasbord of culinary delights, as 70 gourmet food and drink traders, bars and entertainers set up shop.
The Proper Food Festival attracted 10,000 visitors when it was held in North Shields last year, and organiser Mark Deacon is hoping for a similar turnout in South Shields.
He said: “I’m really looking forward to the first South Shields event. The location is fantastic and we have got some great traders.
“We are hoping for a good turnout from the people of South Tyneside.”
At the free, three-day event, about 50 stalls will exhibit and there will be about 20 hot food and drink stalls.
Companies from across the North East, including Kitty’s Ginger Wine, Rutherford Organics, Hot Stuff Chilli Company, Ellis Cupcakes and New Zealand Pies, will sell their products.
South Shields business Cupcake and Co is the only vender taking part which is based in the town.
Owners Joanne and Daniel Welsh are thrilled to be getting involved.
“We are really looking forward to it with it being over the whole weekend,” said Joanne, who is the firm’s baker.
“It’s going to be showcasing loads of local producers, and it’s not, to my knowledge, anything that South Shields has had before.”
Cupcake and Co will have a variety of cupcakes and loaf cakes from their stall, though Joanne is keeping the finer details and quantities of tasty treats which she will be selling, close to her chest.
She added: “I’m keeping a close eye on the weather but, hopefully, it won’t affect it too much. It’s a Bank Holiday anyway. I can’t wait.
“I probably know most of the people there from the other events we take part in. I’m really looking forward to it because most of the things we do are out of the area.
“Hopefully, once it’s been to South Shields, and it’s a success, it will be something they will, do here every year.”
The Proper Food Festival will take place in Bents Park from 10am to 5pm, Saturday to Monday.
