A WORLD-renowned poet is heading to South Tyneside next week.
Former Poet Laureate Sir Andrew Motion will be appearing at the Customs House on Friday, February 8.
Sir Andrew will be sharing his latest work, an anthology aptly named The Customs House, at the Mill Dam venue in South Shields.
The writer, who stepped down as Poet Laureate after just 10 years rather than staying on for life (as has been the tradition for the role), will read poems, talk about his career and take questions from the audience.
His book contains poetry about the First and Second World Wars, his marriage and other topics.
He said: “I’ve been to South Shields before, but not for a very long time.
“I’m very much looking forward to coming back.”
Sir Andrew is also spearheading the national Poetry By Heart competition, which invites school and college pupils between the ages of 14 and 18 to learn and recite poetry from memory.
Tickets for the 7.45pm show cost £12.50, with a £10 concession, or £5 for students and schools.
To book, go to www.customshouse.co.uk or call the box office on 454 1234.
* We’ve got two pairs of tickets to give away for the event.
